02 / THE THREE-MAN SQUAD
Uilenstede, Amstelveen.
Somewhere between studying and making noise.
After Ruud and Rick’s high school adventure with Shrub ↗, Rick brought Iwan along and Mosphat was born. Ruud’s room in the Uilenstede student housing complex in Amstelveen doubled as our studio.
Mostly on weekends, or whenever our studies left us some time, we tried to turn the sounds in our heads into something you could actually listen to. Synths, beats, guitars and a lot of rhymes.
Money was tight, so we worked with what we had. Even the mic stands were improvised: a lamp, some tape, and we were ready to record.
A proper CD pressing was beyond our budget. So we bought a stack of CD-Rs, burned copies of our first album ourselves and sold them to friends and relatives. The hardships of life before Spotify.
Rick also wanted to play in a punk band. Between Mosphat sessions we recorded a few punk songs under the name The Interlude. One of them ended up as a secret ghost track on the CD-R of Are You Angry or Are You Bored? It later found a home on Nothing to Offer, which was only released digitally.
“A three-man squad from the Netherlands, creating genre-bending hip hop anthems. Guitars and computers clash over borderline techno beats and freaky synth manipulations. Goofy lyrics with nasal Ad Rock-ish delivery.”
